Scholastic success consists of two parts -- learning the material and being able to pass a test showing that you know the material. When we believe we can successfully pass a test, it is much easier to do so. How many times have you said to yourself, “I haven’t studied enough,” “I’m not sure I can pass,” and my favorite, “What if I fail?” Why not replace these statements with positive affirmations? “I have studied enough,” “I know I will pass,” and the best, “I am a success.”

Changing the expectation we have about our performance makes all the difference. Of course, you still have to learn the material. It is possible to know everything you need to know and still not do well on tests. Why? Because your subconscious is telling you that you are not good enough, you don’t deserve to succeed, you have gone as far as you can. Where do these thoughts come from? They come from many different places -- our parents, our siblings, our friends, social media, and associates. They do not mean to do us harm, but the damage has been done anyway.

I have worked with many students from junior high through college as well as professionals who needed to pass boards or certification tests. After one session, a high school sophomore improved his math test score. I checked in with his mom to see how he had done on his first test since our session. “He got an 87%!” she said excitedly. That was the exact score that he had imagined himself getting in hypnosis!
