Extinguish Negative Habits

Most of our automatic, habitual behavior is driven by the patterns kept in our subconscious mind. Negative patterns are unwanted behaviors that you may feel you have no control over, even though the habit has a negative impact on your life or the lives of others you care about.

Ten common negative habits that you might want to extinguish include:

  • Smoking and vaping

  • Nail-biting

  • Teeth grinding

  • Hair pulling

  • Hoarding

  • Stress eating

  • Perfectionism

  • Procrastination

  • Misuse of alcohol

  • Misuse of recreational drugs

Whether it is smoking, hoarding, procrastination, or other negative habits, Hypnotherapy can help. We begin by exploring the source of your unwanted habit. You may have adopted a negative habit as a response to stress or anxiety that you did not know how to cope with. Or maybe you learned the behavior from observing the pattern of a parent, teacher, or other influential people in your life. Looking back on the habit’s origins can be enlightening.

Perhaps you began to smoke when it was cool and the hip thing to do. Now we know more about smoking and the many medical problems associated with it. Once we understand what triggers your smoking, we can come up with behaviors that will not harm you but still provide a level of stress relief and comfort. For example, a warm cup of tea or a brisk walk can do a lot towards relieving the stress that can lead to these behaviors.

However, consciously knowing what triggers your negative habit does not always translate to a change in behavior. That’s where the subconscious mind comes in. In hypnotherapy sessions, you are guided to enter a deep state of relaxation (hypnosis) where your subconscious mind is best able to rehearse and learn how to respond to your habit trigger in a new, positive way. We will find your “happy place,” and anchor it to the calm, relaxed feeling you feel in hypnosis. When you find yourself beginning to do the behavior you are trying to extinguish, you instead focus on feeling calm and relaxed. Eventually, the behavior will be completely replaced by a feeling of calm.

We will write affirmations that you can use to remind yourself of the changes you are making. “I am a permanent non-smoker.” “I have beautiful, long nails.” “My hair is healthy and full.” These affirmations will reinforce the suggestions made in hypnosis.

You will also receive your own copy of my book and journal, The Power In Affirmations. Clients use this as part of their daily practice to reinforce their personal affirmations for positive change and track progress toward their goals.

Hypnotherapy can help you to extinguish negative habits that may be harmful to you or loved ones and reap the benefits of self-confidence and improved health as you take the actions that move you forward toward your goals.
