The Gift of Imperfection

My husband Burt has spent more than 25 years of his career managing software developers and project managers. Some projects require flawless, failsafe coding, regardless of how long it might take to produce and test.  These projects tend to have life threating or financially disastrous consequences if the code fails in use. Most projects, however, require only tolerable product-use risks as long as the project is delivered on schedule, within budget.

Burt has two key challenges to do his job successfully. First, he must choose and assign the right developers and project manager to each project according to its primary requirement for perfectionism or productivity. Secondly, he needs to coach his perfectionist staff members to give themselves the gift of imperfection when they are assigned to a productivity primary requirement project.

But for some, the season brings a bit more fear than fun—particularly if you struggle with phasmophobia, or the fear of ghosts. If you dread the thought of encountering anything remotely ghostly, or you’re simply curious about the psychology behind it, this article is for you.

What is Phasmophobia?

Phasmophobia, derived from the Greek word phasma, meaning apparition or ghost, and phobos, meaning fear, refers to an intense, irrational fear of ghosts or supernatural entities. Unlike the general unease you may feel watching a spooky movie or walking through a haunted house, phasmophobia is more severe, often leading to anxiety, panic attacks, and an overwhelming avoidance of anything even remotely related to ghosts.

Not everyone who believes in ghosts experiences phasmophobia. But those who do are often deeply affected by this fear. It can interfere with your daily life, especially during times like Halloween when ghostly images are everywhere.

From Trance to Transformation

Hypnosis is a captivating phenomenon that has intrigued and mystified humanity for centuries. From its ancient origins to its modern-day application in therapy, the journey of hypnosis unveils a fascinating narrative of discovery, innovation, and transformation.

When I was invited to speak to a group about hypnosis and my hypnotherapy practice last March, I asked the group’s host what they would like to know. Her answer was simply “all about hypnosis and hypnotherapy”.  My talk began with a discussion about the history of hypnosis and its evolution to become the foundational technique for modern Hypnotherapists. Perhaps you may find this story informative and valuable as well.

Pre-History:

The roots of hypnosis can be traced back to ancient civilizations, where trance-like states were utilized for healing and spiritual practices. Hypnotic states for healing began in Egypt some 5,000 years ago.  It spread to Greece and included herbs and special sleep chambers.  Oracles also used hypnotic techniques. 

Ancient Egyptians and Greeks explored altered states of consciousness through rituals and ceremonies, believing in the power of suggestion to induce healing and enlightenment. As Christianity evolved through the 17th century, it ended many of these ancient practices but kept  some parts of hypnosis in rituals, including incense and songs. 

Mesmerism:

In 1774, Dr. Franz Mesmer in Vienna, Austria discovered that the mind has power over the body.  Mesmer's theory of "animal magnetism" proposed that an invisible force could influence health and behavior, paving the way for the practice of mesmerism. This was the basis for hypnosis.   From his name MESMER comes the word mesmerize, which literally means to hypnotize or spellbind.  Early practitioners were called mesmerists. 

In the 19th century Mesmer's theatrical demonstrations and dramatic techniques gained widespread attention, leading to the establishment of mesmerism as a popular form of entertainment and therapy.

Clinical Hypnosis gained followers because there was no anesthesia for doing medical procedures or surgery.  In 1824, Dr. Jules Cloquet performed breast surgery on a female subject under hypnosis.   Doctors discovered that by “distracting” or occupying the mind, they could lessen the patient’s discomfort during surgery.  Hypnosis today may be used during childbirth, dental procedures or surgeries when the patient does not want to use an anesthetic.

Hypnosis:

In 1849 James Braid, a doctor in England, gave hypnosis its name from Hypnos, the Greek God of Sleep .  He is widely considered the “Father of Hypnosis”. Originally, he thought that hypnosis was actual sleep brought on by eye fatigue and that’s why people think of hypnosis as looking at a watch or bright object back and forth in front of your eyes.  When he realized that it wasn’t actually SLEEP, he tried to rename hypnosis, but it was too late, the name had already taken off and has stuck to this day.

In 1895 while Sigmund Freud was studying at the university of Vienna, he was exposed to psychology and hypnosis.  A contemporary of his, Dr. Breur, hypnotized a client he called Anna O to help her with symptoms she developed after the illness and death of her father.  Through his work with Anna O, he developed psychoanalysis which was further developed by Freud.  Early in his career, Freud used hypnosis with his patients.  He later rejected hypnosis in favor of psychoanalysis.  This may be why hypnosis is not taught in most medical schools.

Scientific Exploration and Evolution:

The 20th century witnessed a significant shift in the perception of hypnosis, as researchers and clinicians delved into its scientific basis and therapeutic potential. During this era, hypnosis gained recognition as a valuable tool in medicine, psychology, and psychotherapy, with applications ranging from pain management and anesthesia to behavior modification and trauma recovery. The development of standardized inductions, deepening techniques, and hypnotic interventions contributed to the growing acceptance and integration of hypnosis into mainstream healthcare.

In 1920 - Pharmacist Emile Couee used hypnosis to help his clients get maximum benefits from their drugs.  When he told them under hypnosis that the drugs would be effective, they had better results from the medication.  His affirmation, “Every day in every way, I’m getting better and better” has become very famous.  He was a great believer in self-hypnosis.

A side note – In the 1920’s stage hypnosis became very popular from its use in vaudeville acts.  Stage hypnosis and hypnotherapy are 2 very different aspects of hypnosis.  You may have seen stage hypnosis where people are hypnotized to do and say things they might not do otherwise.  This is simply for fun and entertainment.  Hypnotherapy is for change – it’s a vehicle to help clients move forward in a positive manner.

Ernest Hilgard’s groundbreaking work on the "hidden observer" phenomenon and his research into the complexities of hypnosis spanned much of the 20th century, with notable contributions made from the 1940s through the 1990s. His research shed light on the complex interplay between conscious and subconscious processes, deepening our understanding of hypnotic phenomena. His studies paved the way for the development of innovative hypnotic techniques and therapeutic interventions, influencing the practice of hypnotherapy and psychology.

Hilgard founded the Laboratory of Hypnosis Research at Stanford University in the 1950s. In 1959 the subsequent development of the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale marked the first effort to develop an empirically validated measure of hypnosis and hypnotizability and provided the basis to evaluate previously advanced theories regarding hypnosis and hypnotizability.

Milton H. Erickson, an American psychiatrist and psychologist, made groundbreaking contributions to the field of hypnotherapy throughout the 20th century. Born in 1901, Erickson developed a keen interest in hypnosis and psychotherapy early in his career, despite facing. He used self-hypnosis to overcome pain resulting from childhood polio.  His innovative approach to hypnotherapy, characterized by its utilization of indirect suggestion, metaphor, and storytelling, revolutionized the practice of hypnosis and sychotherapy.

Erickson's influential work on therapeutic techniques garnered widespread recognition and acclaim. He founded the field of Ericksonian hypnotherapy, emphasizing the importance of individualized, client-centered approaches to treatment. Erickson's teachings and methods inspired generations of therapists and continue to shape the practice of hypnotherapy to this day.

John G. Kappas was a pioneering figure in the field of hypnotherapy. Kappas made significant contributions to the field of hypnotherapy from the mid-20th century through the late 20th century. He is renowned for his development of the "Theory of Mind" and the concept of the "subconscious mind." Through his extensive research and clinical practice, Kappas elucidated the role of the subconscious mind in shaping behavior, beliefs, and emotional responses. He developed a comprehensive model of hypnotherapy based on the principles of subconscious reprogramming and behavior modification, laying the foundation for modern hypnotherapeutic approaches. Kappas's contributions revolutionized the practice of hypnotherapy, providing therapists with effective tools and techniques for facilitating profound and lasting change in clients.

Modern Hypnotherapy:

As we journey into the 21st century, hypnotherapy continues to evolve and adapt to the changing landscape of healthcare and wellness. Advances in neuroscience and technology have deepened our understanding of the brain's response to hypnosis, shedding light on the neural mechanisms underlying hypnotic phenomena.

Contemporary hypnotherapy embraces a holistic approach to healing, integrating hypnosis with complementary modalities such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and positive psychology. Hypnotherapists leverage the power of suggestion, visualization, and metaphor to facilitate profound shifts in perception, behavior, and well-being.

Applications and Impact:

The applications of hypnotherapy are vast and diverse, addressing a wide range of physical, emotional, and behavioral issues. From smoking cessation and weight management to anxiety reduction and performance enhancement, hypnotherapy offers a versatile and effective approach to personal transformation and empowerment.

In addition to clinical settings, hypnosis has found its way into various domains, including sports performance, education, and entertainment. Athletes harness hypnosis to overcome mental barriers and optimize performance, while students use self-hypnosis techniques to enhance learning and memory retention.

Part 4: Harnessing the Power of Mindset: Stop Smoking Now with Help from Hypnotherapy

In 2021 the doctor told Karen’s husband that if he wanted to live for a few more years, he had to make some significant changes in his eating and lifestyle.  That was all Karen needed to hear.  She revamped their eating, changing to homecooked, organic ingredient meals.  They started walking every night.  There was only one more hurdle – she had been a heavy smoker for 35 years.  She had tried to quite smoking before, she wanted to be a good example for her grandsons whom she watched 3 days a week.  She called me, explained the situation and asked if I could help.  Absolutely, I said and we started to work on her smoking.  I used the 3 session protocol I always use:  #1 Get ready to quit and pick a quit date, #2 Quit and #3 Seal in that she will never smoke again. I am happy to report that after three years, Karen is still smoke-free.

Part 3: Harnessing the Power of Mindset: Better Sleep with Help from Hypnotherapy

Most adults have had a sleepless night or a ‘didn’t sleep well last night’ experience at one time or another. This experience can be simply a passing annoyance. However, for some of you, frequent or chronic insomnia can be a debilitating problem with significant mental and physical health implications.

Juanita had done an excellent job of training herself to get by on 3 (yes, 3!) hours of sleep a night.  She was a young mother, working part time and going to school.  She literally believed that she had no time to sleep.  10 years later, her son (and now daughter as well) were 8 and 10 and she wanted to sleep more and better.  Could I help? Of course I could.

First of all, we talked about her goals and how important getting a better night’s sleep was to her.  She felt that at her age, she needed more sleep.  Her goal was 7-8 hours a night.  The first thing we did was come up with a set of affirmations changing her mindset about sleep.  Instead of “I won’t be able to sleep more than 3 hours tonight,” we changed her self-talk to “I easily get 8 hours of sleep every night.”  In hypnosis, she was really relaxed for the first time in a long time.  I encouraged her to listen to the recording of her hypnosis session as she was falling asleep so she would be very relaxed.  Each time she listened to the recording she reinforced that feeling of complete relaxation.  Soon, she was sleeping 7-8 hours every night.

After your first few hypnotherapy sessions, you may also feel like you have had a ‘good night’s sleep’ for the first time in weeks, months, or even years. You fell asleep easily, slept through the night, and woke up in the morning feeling alert and refreshed.

The first time I tried hypnotherapy, I was desperate.  I had tried everything to lose weight after the birth of my third child.  Nothing worked.  A friend told me about hypnotherapy and I thought, “Why not?”  After explaining about how hypnotherapy worked and asking me about my goals, the kind and gentle hypnotherapist told me to relax in his big, overstuffed recliner.  I don’t remember much else about the session.

Part 4: Ready-Set-Go: Achieving and Sustaining New Year's Resolutions With Your Hypnotherapist's Support

Jeff began his New Year’s Resolution journey on his own with no blueprint and no support. A research study in 2020 investigated what resolutions people make when they are free to formulate them, whether different resolutions reach differing success rates, and whether it is possible to increase the likelihood of a resolution’s success through various types of support. Participants were placed in three groups: active control, some support, and extended support. Surveys tell us that a New Year’s Resolution to lose some weight is one of the top 3 resolutions that people make every year. One of my clients came to me last January wanting to lose 40 lbs. In our initial two sessions I worked with her to establish her readiness to make changes and to craft her resolutions in a SMART form. Then we began to apply the power of hypnotherapy, affirmations, and guided visualization to support her weight loss actions. By June she was well on her way. By year end she was down 27 pounds. In my hypnotherapy practice I include the use of positive affirmations as an integral part of the process.

Affirmations are statements about yourself, your thoughts, beliefs and behaviors as you want them to be. They use positive, constructive words to state what you intend to be true when your have completed a personal change goal such as a New Year’s Resolution.

The word ‘affirm’ means to make firm. You can use written affirmations to make a goal or belief firm in your subconscious mind and bring it into forceful alignment with your conscious desire. Affirmations are a vehicle for change, for transformation, in your life.

Crafting Effective Positive Affirmations

Affirmations are written in the present tense as if the statements are true now. They usually begin with the words ‘I’ or ‘My’ and include positive feelings or actions. Here is an easy six step process you can use when crafting positive affirmations that will support achieving your New Year’s Resolutions:

  1. Find a quiet, peaceful place where you can relax and work without distraction for a least 20 minutes

  2.  Using a simple sheet of paper or notebook, consider and jot down several of your current issues, problems and goals for change

  3. Select an issue that is important to you to work on first. Refer to part 2 in this series and render that issue as a SMART New Year’s Resolution

  4. Write out some statements beginning with ‘I’ or ‘My’ and affirming your desired state/goal as true. Write them in the present tense, using positive feeling and action words. Keep going until you have seven to ten statements to work with

  5. Read your statements out loud and notice which ones resonate strongly  and feel the most powerful and authentic for you

  6. Pick the top three statements to use in beginning your daily affirmation practice in support of your New Year’s Resolutions

Breaking the Chronic Procrastination Cycle * Hypnotherapy Can Help

Welcome back to our ongoing exploration of the human mind and the transformative power of hypnotherapy. One pervasive issue that many of my clients grapple with - chronic procrastination. As a certified hypnotherapist with 15 years in practice, I've encountered various manifestations of procrastination and witnessed the profound changes that hypnotherapy can bring.

A new client called and said, “My boss says I need to come see you or I will be fired.”  Not my usual call from a new client.  I asked him what was the issue.  He said he was chronically late to work and his boss was tired of it.  A good example of how chronic procrastination can affect all parts of your life. 

We worked together to find the causes of his procrastination – he just wanted to be on his computer more. We came up with a set of affirmations, changing his beliefs about himself and his ability to change and be on time.  We came up with an anchor, a way of anchoring in the feeling he felt in hypnosis.  He used his anchor when he felt out of control and that brought him back to believing that he could change and be on time.  He made some behavior changes – setting his alarm earlier, moving some tasks from the morning to the evening before and staying off the computer in the mornings.   He began to arrive at work not only on time, but 15 minutes early like his boss preferred.

After a few sessions, he mentioned to me that not only was he doing so much better at work, but his marriage was also better.  We had never discussed his marriage in our sessions.  He said that when his wife got grumpy or yelled at him, he used his anchor to calm himself and let her vent.  It is impossible to have an argument with only one person yelling.  He really appreciated this side benefit of his hypnotherapy sessions
